  • About the Edition

This symposium is the seventh of a series of IUTAM symposia dealing with probabilistic methods in mechanics. It focused on advances in the area of probabilistic mechanics with direct application to structural reliability issues. The papers selected for this volume address collectively the four components of a structural reliability problem. They are: characterization of stochastic loads, description of material properties in terms of fatigue and fracture, response determination, and quantitative assessment of the reliability of the structural system. They include Keynote Lectures by V. Bolotin (Russia), O. Ditlevsen (Denmark), R. Heller (USA), and F. Ziegler (Austria).

Uncertainties play a dominant role in the design and optimization of structures and infrastructures.

In optimum design of structural systems due to variations of the material, manufacturing variations, variations of the external loads and modelling uncertainty, the parameters of a structure, a structural system and its environment are not given, fixed.

One of the objectives in performance‐based earthquake engineering is to quantify the seismic reliability of a structure at a site. For that purpose, probabilistic seismic demand analysis (PSDA) is used as a tool to estimate the mean annual frequency of exceeding a specified value of a structural demand parameter (e.g.

Annual probabilities of nonperformance are considered as the probabilistic constraints, and the Monte Carlo simulation technique is used to evaluate the seismic reliability of the structure. Results indicate that the proposed MDGSA in conjunction with the metamodel can provide an efficient and effective tool for the RBDO of large-scale structures.

The first-order reliability method, (FORM), is a semi-probabilistic reliability analysis method devised to evaluate the reliability of a system. The accuracy of the method can be improved by averaging over many samples, which is known as Line Sampling. The method is also known as the Hasofer-Lind Reliability Index, developed by Professor Michael Hasofer and Professor Neil.
